Criminology – Level 3 Applied Diploma WJEC (601/6248/X)

WHAT THIS COURSE OFFERS YOU

  • Criminology is the study of the reasons why individuals commit crime. This course will enable you to use theories of criminality to analyse criminal situations and suggest ways of reducing crime.
  • You will develop your writing skills, description skills, application of knowledge skills, evaluation skills, independent study skills, organisation skills and time management.

    • …you want to understand why people commit a crime, and whether we can control crime or rehabilitate criminals

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • 5 GCSE passes at G4 or higher, including English and Maths.

 

ASSESSMENT / CORE MODULES

  • Unit 1 covers different types of crime, influences on perceptions of crime and why some crimes are unreported.
  • Unit 2 examines various theories about why people commit crime, drawing on what they have learned in Unit 1.
  • Unit 3 provides an understanding of the criminal justice system from the moment a crime has been identified to the verdict.  You will examine information in order to review the justice of verdicts in criminal cases.
  • In Unit 4, you will evaluate the effectiveness of social control to deliver criminal justice policy.

 

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

  • Each unit is worth 25% of the overall grade
  • Unit 1 – Changing Awareness of Crime (Controlled Assessment)
  • Unit 2 – Criminological Theories (Examination)
  • Unit 3 – Crime Scene to Courtroom (Controlled Assessment)
  • Unit 4 – Crime & Punishment (Examination)
  • You will develop the knowledge and skills to research policy in practice, assess campaigns for changes in awareness and examine information to review verdicts in criminal cases.

 

FUTURE PATHWAYS

  • The course is designed to prepare students for undergraduate study
  • Possible future careers include journalism, criminal justice services, police officer, prison officer, security services, court services, politics, probation officer, social worker, youth worker.
